2000 bmw 323i radiator fan runs while car is off but not while it is on.?
2000 bmw 323i. 5 speed. radiator fan will not come on while car is running...it comes close to overheating when driving in town with air conditioner on. does fine on open road, but fan still dont kick on. after parking car,it wont be on as you walk away from it...but if you come back out a hour or so later,it is on and running, and wont turn off unless you unplug it under the hood.it has drained my battery down a few times. dont want a rig job..want to fix it right, but need to know where to start.
why not just run a control wire to it which is connected to the ACC. when the car key is on it runs. when not. doesnt..

Bmw 2000 323i radiator fan stays on?
my radiator fan has been on for about an hour after i turned the engine off, i disconnected my battery. is there a switch or a relay that can be replaced for this? where is it located? is there any thing else it could be?
The relay is built-in to the electric auxiliary fan. And the fan is always powered but only turned on by the AC control module (ihka/ihkr) and/or the engine control module (dme) by providing the grounding signal to the relay. So in your case, the relay is bad and therefore you have to replace the whole electric auxiliary fan assembly. During emergencies like the fan running continously even after a decent time from key off, just pull the cable connector at the right side of the fan shroud.

if the fans stay on while the engine is running also and NEVER cut off, even when turning the A/c off then you have an open relay or a short somewhere. but more than likely its a stuck open relay. finding it will be your job, the relays will be in one of the electrical boxes under your hood, not sure because im not familier with BMW's but it will be under the hood in one of those boxes. Your best bet is to go to nearest auto parts store, buy the cooling fan relay, or if your like me with a lexus you might have more than 1 relay for the fans, i had 3. Buy all 3 start replacing them and see which one works, return the ones you dont need, if none of them solve the issue then return all of them, then you know you have a short/grounded out wire somewhere.another thing to check would be the coolant temp sensor, also known as the cooling fan switch, it will always be the sensor you can see going into the radiator, if yu want to test it, pull out a volt meter if you have it and set it to test ohms, unplug the harness from the temp switch on the radiator there should be 2 metal prongs coming out from the sensor, put your leads from volt meter on it and if it reads as an OPEN circuit when cool then its good on that end(1.--- on voltmeter), after locating your fan relays, remove them, turn the car on and let it heat up with A/c off, if you run the car with A/c on and fans not on youll burn up the compressor real fast, anyway, after removing relays let the car heat up and let the temp needle rise above what it normally does, then take your 2 leads from volt meter again and test the temp sensor, if it reads as a closed circuit (0.00 or any ohms numer like 070 ohms or any amount for that matter then the sensor is working because when the temp rises, the sensor closes a circuit inside itself creating a power flow from the harness, telling the fans to come on. hope to be of help on this
2000 BMW 323I RADIATOR FAN?
recently my radiator fan had been on even with the car off. my mechanic said that the switch was stuck, so i have been unplugging it under the hood whenever i get out of the car. the other morning i plugged it in and the fan did not come on, so i guess it is not going to work anymore. i had no other option but to drive it and to my surprise it did not overheat. i have been driving it for a week now and it has not overheated at all according to the gauge. why is it not overheating? is it bad for me to be driving it? im planning on replacing the fan as soon as i get the money.
mechanic said the relay was built into the fan so i would need to replace the fan. the fan was coming on immediately when i plugged it in without the car being on. mechanic took the fan out and said the relay was stuck on high. he put it back in and told me i could pull the plug to control it, before i was disconnecting the battery to get it off so it wouldnt kill my battery overnight.
Assuming you don't have a mechanical fan with it. Maybe the fan is coming on. Anyway, maybe check the relay/switch instead of replacing the fan. The fan seem to be working.
